Canguaru is a free English-language directory and weekly newsletter connecting Brazilian food, events, businesses, classes and services with audiences across Australia.
Canguaru is a free, English-first guide to Brazilian food, events, businesses, classes and services across Australia — from churrascarias in Sydney to forró nights in Melbourne, capoeira schools in Brisbane and removalists who speak your language.
It exists to solve a simple problem: Brazilian culture in Australia was thriving but invisible. Events were promoted in Portuguese inside closed social groups. Great businesses had no English presence. Artists had nowhere to point a venue booker. If you weren't already inside the community, you couldn't find it — and even if you were, you could still miss it.
Canguaru makes it visible, in the language everyone here shares. Every listing is free. Every page is written in English first, with Brazilian Portuguese as flavour, so a curious neighbour, a venue booker or a council officer can discover a festa junina as easily as a Brazilian can matar a saudade.
The name is a bridge too. Canguru is Portuguese for kangaroo — Australia's most iconic animal. Guaru is Guarulhos, São Paulo: the founder's hometown, and home to Brazil's largest airport, where countless Brazilians have hugged their families goodbye and boarded a flight towards a new life. Canguaru merges the two into one word — the leap forward, and the place it all began.
Who's behind it
Canguaru is founded and run by Gildo Santos, a Brazilian digital specialist based on Sydney's Northern Beaches, with 27 years of experience in web development and 15 years in live music and event production in Brazil.
It began as a newsletter — one five-minute email a week about what's on — and grew into the platform it is today: a directory, an events guide, and a free community membership, read across 8 states and territories.
