About Brazilian Cakes

Brazilian cakes are soft, moist celebration cakes built around rich fillings — chocolate fudge (brigadeiro), caramel (doce de leite) and coconut cream (beijinho) — and in Australia they are mostly made to order by Brazilian home bakers and small cake shops (confeitarias). Everyday favourites include a carrot cake with a chocolate top (bolo de cenoura), cake in a jar (bolo de pote) and cornmeal cake (bolo de fubá), while birthdays and weddings call for a tall, decorated party cake (bolo de festa) and a table of bite-sized sweets (docinhos).

This guide lists every Brazilian cake maker, bakery and dessert shop on Canguaru, by city and state, with what they bake and how to order.

What makes a Brazilian cake different

Australian cakes tend to be about the sponge and the icing. Brazilian cakes are about the filling. A classic party cake is two or three thin layers of vanilla or chocolate sponge, brushed with syrup until they are almost wet, then filled generously with chocolate fudge, caramel, milk-powder cream (known as ninho), coconut cream or fruit. The outside is usually whipped cream or a light buttercream, decorated for the occasion, and the cake is served cold from the fridge rather than at room temperature.

The other difference is who makes it. In Brazil the best cakes come from a home baker (confeiteira) or a small shop, taking orders by WhatsApp and Instagram. The Brazilian community in Australia works the same way, which is why most listings in this guide are baked to order rather than sold from a counter.

The cakes you'll see most

  • Carrot cake with chocolate fudge top (bolo de cenoura) — not the Australian kind: bright orange, dense and buttery, with no spices or cream-cheese icing, finished with a thick layer of chocolate fudge poured over the top. The most requested Brazilian cake outside Brazil.
  • Cake in a jar (bolo de pote) — sponge, filling and topping layered in a sealed jar. Sold individually, keeps for days in the fridge, and travels well. Common flavours: chocolate fudge, milk cream with strawberry, and coconut-and-chocolate (prestígio).
  • Party cake (bolo de festa) — the decorated birthday or wedding cake described above. Ordered by size (number of slices or kilos) and filling.
  • Guava roll cake (bolo de rolo) — a specialty from Pernambuco in Brazil's north-east: paper-thin sponge rolled with guava paste into a tight spiral and dusted with sugar.
  • Cornmeal and sweetcorn cakes (bolo de fubá, bolo de milho) — simple, coffee-friendly cakes and a Festa Junina (June winter festival) favourite.
  • Condensed-milk flan (pudim) — not a cake, but no Brazilian dessert table is complete without it, and most cake makers here offer it.

Party sweets, wedding favours and the dessert table

A Brazilian celebration cake rarely arrives alone. Alongside it goes a table of bite-sized sweets (the mesa de doces), usually a hundred or more for a birthday. The core three are brigadeiro (chocolate fudge balls rolled in sprinkles), beijinho (the coconut version) and cajuzinho (the peanut version), all based on condensed milk, with gourmet flavours in pistachio, passionfruit, Nutella and dozens more. For weddings, the traditional favour is the bem-casado ("well married"): a small sponge sandwich filled with caramel and wrapped in tissue paper. Many of the bakers in this guide take sweet and favour orders together with the cake, and some do full dessert tables for weddings and corporate events.

How ordering works

  • Most makers take orders through Instagram or WhatsApp; a few have a website or sell through a shopfront or café
  • Cakes in a jar and party sweets can often be picked up within a few days; decorated celebration cakes usually need a week or more, and wedding cakes several weeks
  • Cakes are ordered by size and filling; ask for a flavour list and check whether delivery is offered in your area
  • Prices vary by size, decoration and location, so compare a couple of makers near you
  • Some shops and cafés keep cakes in a jar, carrot cake slices and sweets in the cabinet for walk-ins

Where to find Brazilian cakes in Australia

Sydney has the largest cluster, with the Northern Beaches around Dee Why and Brookvale, the inner south and the west all well covered. Gold Coast and Brisbane follow closely, then Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide and Hobart. Regional Victoria and Queensland have a handful of home bakers too. Each listing below shows the maker's specialties, suburb and how to get in touch.

How to use this guide

Browse by city and state, or filter by cake type using the Food filter. Listings link to Instagram, websites and contact details. If a Brazilian cake maker isn't listed, or you are one, listings on Canguaru are free — tell us and we'll add it.

Brazilian Cakes: good to know

What is a Brazilian cake? +

A Brazilian cake is a soft, syrup-moistened sponge with a generous filling such as brigadeiro, doce de leite, ninho or coconut beijinho, usually finished with chantilly and served cold. Everyday versions include bolo de cenoura, bolo de pote and bolo de fubá; celebration versions (bolo de festa) are tall, layered and decorated for the occasion.

What is bolo de cenoura? +

Bolo de cenoura is Brazilian carrot cake: a dense, bright-orange butter cake made with blended raw carrot, topped with a thick layer of chocolate brigadeiro. Unlike Australian carrot cake it has no spices, nuts or cream-cheese icing. It is the most requested Brazilian cake in Australia and most makers in this guide offer it.

What is bolo de pote? +

Bolo de pote is cake in a jar: layers of sponge, filling and topping sealed in a small pot, sold individually. Popular flavours are brigadeiro, ninho with strawberry and prestígio (coconut and chocolate). It keeps for several days in the fridge, travels well and is the easiest way to try Brazilian cake without ordering a whole one.

What are docinhos? +

Docinhos are the bite-sized sweets served alongside a Brazilian celebration cake. The classic three are brigadeiro (chocolate), beijinho (coconut) and cajuzinho (peanut), all based on condensed milk, with gourmet flavours like pistachio, passionfruit and Nutella now common. Most cake makers in this guide take docinho orders with the cake, typically by the hundred for parties.

How far in advance should I order a Brazilian cake? +

Allow about a week for a decorated birthday cake and several weeks for a wedding cake, especially in busy months. Bolo de pote and docinhos can often be ready within a few days. Most makers take orders through Instagram or WhatsApp; contact details are on each listing.

What is a bem-casado? +

A bem-casado (literally 'well married') is the traditional Brazilian wedding favour: two small discs of soft sponge sandwiched with doce de leite, glazed and wrapped in tissue paper or tulle. They are ordered by the dozen and several bakers in this guide make them alongside wedding cakes and dessert tables.

Can I buy Brazilian cake in a shop, or is it all made to order? +

Mostly made to order. Most listings here are home bakers and small confeitarias who bake on request. A few bakeries, cafés and dessert shops keep bolo de pote, slices of bolo de cenoura and docinhos in the cabinet for walk-ins; use the Business Category filter to find Bakery, Coffee Shop and Dessert Shop listings near you.

Do Brazilian cake makers deliver? +

Many do within their local area, and some list delivery as a service. Delivery for decorated cakes is usually limited to nearby suburbs because the cakes are kept cold and are fragile. Check the listing or ask the maker when you order; pickup is the norm for most home bakers.
