About Brazilian Restaurants
Australia has more than 60 Brazilian restaurants, most of them in Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast, ranging from all-you-can-eat churrascarias to small kitchens serving prato feito at lunch. Brazilian food is not one cuisine — it changes with the region — and the restaurants here reflect that: churrasco from the south, moqueca and acarajé from Bahia, feijoada from everywhere.
This guide lists every Brazilian restaurant on Canguaru by city and state, with what each one is known for.
What kind of Brazilian restaurant are you looking for?
The main ones you'll find in Australia:
- Churrascaria — Brazilian barbecue, usually rodízio (all you can eat, carved at the table). The big-night-out option. See our churrasco guide for the full list.
- Prato feito / comida caseira — the daily plate: rice, beans, a protein, farofa, salad. Cheap, filling, what Brazilians eat on a Tuesday. Often lunch-only, often in cafés or near universities.
- Feijoada houses — restaurants that run feijoada on Saturdays (sometimes Wednesdays), the way it works in Brazil. Book ahead; it sells out.
- Bahian and north-eastern — moqueca, bobó de camarão, acarajé, vatapá. Coconut milk, dendê oil, seafood. Rare in Australia, worth travelling for.
- Cafés and lanchonetes — coxinha, pão de queijo, pastel, açaí bowls, a strong coffee. Brazilian breakfast and snacks, all day.
- Bars and botecos — caipirinhas, petiscos, live music on weekends. Half restaurant, half party.
Dishes to order if it's your first time
- Feijoada — black beans slow-cooked with pork, served with rice, farofa, collard greens and orange
- Picanha — the rump cap, grilled with the fat on, the cut Brazil is proudest of
- Moqueca — fish or prawn stew in coconut milk and dendê
- Coxinha — the chicken croquette shaped like a drumstick; the standard by which a Brazilian judges a kitchen
- Pão de queijo — cheese bread, gluten-free by nature, eaten warm
- Brigadeiro or pudim to finish
Where the restaurants are
Sydney has the most — around thirty — concentrated in the eastern suburbs (Bondi, Maroubra, Rosebery), the inner west (Marrickville) and the northern beaches (Dee Why, Brookvale). Brisbane and the Gold Coast come next, with Surfers Paradise, Southport and Fortitude Valley the main pockets. Perth, Melbourne and Adelaide each have a handful, and they tend to be the kind locals defend fiercely. Canberra, Hobart and Darwin have one or two.
How to use this guide
Browse by city and state. Each listing shows the type of restaurant, the suburb, and links to the website and social accounts. Filters let you narrow to churrasco, feijoada, seafood or café. Weekend feijoada and rodízio nights book out — check before you go.
